Blog 5: System 1 & 2 into Researching

When researching for the final paper we will be using both systems together. One example of system 1 that we will be using is comparing the articles to the topic that we have chosen to make sure they are related and not off topic. “System 1 detects simple relations (‘they are all alike.’ ‘the son is much taller than the father’)… (Kahneman pg.36).” As long as you are just comparing the topics and not looking too in-depth it would be considered system 1.

You will also be using system 2 when researching, an example for that would be when you are reading over the sources argument and making sure their argument makes sense. “Check the validity of a complex logical argument… you must pay attention, and you will perform less well, or not at all, if you are not ready or if your attention is directed inappropriately. (Kahneman pg. 22-23)” If you do not give your full attention to this task you may not perform or do this task as well as you could. When checking the validity of an argument you should give your full attention to make sure their argument is valid and not just biased and appealing.
