Blog 9: Comparing

When thinking about DFW’s Kenyon Commencement Speech, it is actually lines up to some of what is mentioned in Thinking Fast and Slow. In the speech he mentions that if you are in a store your natural default would to get things and get out fast, only thinking about you. That natural default would be like your system one, you aren’t really thinking you are simply doing. But, the goal that the speech mentioned was to try to break that natural default, that system one, that habit to only think about yourself when someone else may be having just as bad of a day as you and you may not even realize it. You need to reach into your system two which requires more thinking.

I think that we have more control than what we realize, if we were to start small and find at least one thing a day to be positive about then maybe two weeks later find two things a day, eventually it will just become a habit for us to think positive about things. We may not always have that option, and there are times that you just can’t find something, but those may be the times to help someone else. If you can’t help yourself then help someone else. Make yourself a better person so that maybe we can make the world a better and happier place.
